Segurola, Juan
An organism can make a specific response to a substance it has not previously encountered. One possible explanation is instruction: the foreign substance tells the organism how to construct the matching response. Another is selection: a repertoire of different possibilities already exists, and the encounter preferentially activates and expands a matching part of it.
Clonal selection changed the proposed location of that repertoire. The crucial variants belonged to cells with different specificities, not merely to a pool of freely circulating antibody molecules. This made specificity, multiplication and persistence parts of one cellular explanation, while creating new questions about how the repertoire was generated and controlled.
