Seeing a cell and explaining an organism in terms of cells are different achievements. A microscope can reveal compartments, boundaries or nuclei without establishing that apparently different tissues share a common organization. Nor does a static image tell us how the structures in it originated.

The conceptual transformation involved two claims that had to be connected but could also come apart: that cells are fundamental units in plants and animals, and that new cells arise from existing cells. The history is instructive precisely because an influential theory could get the first relationship substantially right while giving an incorrect account of the second.

Un microscopio puede revelar compartimentos, límites o núcleos sin establecer que tejidos aparentemente distintos comparten una organización común. Una imagen estática tampoco nos dice cómo se originaron las estructuras que contiene.

La transformación conceptual implicó dos afirmaciones que debían relacionarse, pero también podían separarse: que las células son unidades fundamentales en plantas y animales, y que las células nuevas surgen de células existentes. La historia resulta instructiva precisamente porque una teoría influyente podía acertar sustancialmente en la primera relación y ofrecer una explicación incorrecta de la segunda.
