QUE-033: Why do we need sleep? / ¿Por qué necesitamos dormir?
Segurola, Juan
Sleep temporarily changes our responsiveness to the world, yet it is not simply a period in which the brain stops working. Its stages have organized patterns of activity, and disrupting sleep can impair subsequent performance. The puzzle is why these functions require, or benefit from, a recurring state so different from ordinary wakefulness. There is a tempting shortcut: identify one process that changes during sleep and announce that it is the reason sleep exists. That conclusion joins several questions too quickly. A process can occur during sleep, contribute to a benefit of sleep, or help explain its evolutionary maintenance. Demonstrating one of those relationships does not automatically establish the others.
