QUE-023: Why can a flame go out while fuel remains?
Segurola, Juan
Fuel remaining tells us that a possible reactant has not been exhausted. It does not tell us that a flame can maintain itself. Sustained combustion requires reactants to reach a reaction region, react rapidly enough, and preserve the thermal and chemical conditions that allow the process to continue. A flame can disappear when that coupled process fails even though combustible material remains nearby. The question is about the mechanism of extinction, not a procedure for handling a fire. Different fuels, geometries and surroundings have different limits. No single temperature or oxygen concentration can be read from the presence of an unused piece of fuel.
