The phrase in this article's title is a useful shorthand and a poor description. A thermometer does not sharpen anyone's sense of heat; it converts temperature into a length the eye can read. What an instrument builds is a chain of conversions whose last link happens to be perceivable, and the human sensorium is not extended anywhere along it. This article follows the consequences: that trusting a reading means trusting every link, that calibrating an instrument is circular before it is routine, and that the interesting instruments are the ones whose output corresponds to no sense at all. It discharges the longitude problem two earlier articles deferred, and finds the familiar account of how it was solved does not survive contact with the scholarship.
