Elastin-derived and recombinant tropoelastin materials offer a distinctive route to highly compliant, extensible and cell-interactive photocurable networks. Their engineering value is not captured by a generic label such as elastic hydrogel. Molecular identity, recombinant or extracted origin, chemical functionalisation, crosslinking mechanism and hydration all influence the measured response. Methacrylated tropoelastin (MeTro) established that recombinant human tropoelastin can be photocrosslinked into highly elastic micropatterned hydrogels that support functional cell organisation. Subsequent biofabrication work has broadened the family of protein-derived photocurable materials. This review defines the measurements needed to connect precursor identity and functionalisation to network elasticity, cyclic response, stress relaxation, swelling and biological function. It also distinguishes true recoverable elasticity from low modulus or viscoelastic softness. The objective is a qualification framework for elastic protein networks that can support printing, tissue-scale deformation and cell interaction without assuming that any elastin-containing formulation reproduces native elastic-tissue mechanics.
