Specialised vat-photopolymerization systems can be designed to move, recover a memorised shape, repair damage, operate as soft elastomers, swell as hydrogels, expand into cellular solids, form enclosed fluidic networks, carry authentication features or process unusually viscous feedstocks. Their apparent diversity conceals a shared engineering problem: the useful response emerges only after a sequence of transformations and is strongly coupled to geometry, transport, network mobility and process history. This qualitative engineering review defines the functional evidence required for eight resin families without transferring vendor specifications or research-paper values across systems. Shape-memory is separated into programming, fixation, storage, activation, recovery and cyclic drift. Self-healing is separated from repair, welding and reprocessing, and is quantified by the recovery of several failure-relevant properties rather than visual closure. Silicone-like photopolymers are distinguished from chemically verified silicones; hydrogels are evaluated in their equilibrated medium and transient hydration states; and true cellular foams are distinguished from architected lattices and unfoamed soft solids. Microfluidic qualification connects optical overcure, cleaning access, surface condition, pressure, leakage and analytical compatibility. Security function begins with a threat model and a controlled challenge–response decision. Hot and viscous lithography are treated as different process architectures, not merely warmer exposure recipes. An applied case compares three routes for an authenticated, serviceable soft microfluidic maintenance cartridge used in an industrial analyser. The decision rejects an unverified all-in-one material, provisionally retains a modular printed route and preserves a conventional comparator. Across all families, the qualifying object is the aged material–process–geometry–interface system in its declared functional state.
