Optical, Photonic, Luminescent, High-Refractive-Index and Radiation-Functional 3D Materials: Scattering, Attenuation, Spectral Response and Qualification
Segurola, Juan
Additive manufacture can shape fused silica, transparent polymers, high-refractive-index nanocomposites, gradient-index structures, photonic crystals, fluorescent and quantum-dot architectures, scintillators, radiation collimators and mixed-field attenuators. The same interactions that create function also constrain manufacturing. Absorbers and high-index particles reshape the cure field; fluorophores and quantum dots can compete with photoinitiators; interfaces scatter; residual stress creates birefringence; polishing changes both dimensions and optical loss; scintillation output depends on energy deposition, transport, coupling and detector response; high-Z loading can increase photon attenuation while viscosity, voids and spectral hardening change the delivered component. This qualitative engineering review defines six distinct functions—transmission, refractive or diffractive control, luminescent conversion, scintillation detection, photon attenuation and neutron attenuation—and links each to appropriate evidence. It develops route-specific invalidation gates for vat photopolymerization, two-photon polymerization, direct ink writing, material extrusion and green-to-glass or ceramic transformations. It also defines spectral measurement records, uncertainty, accelerated ageing and change control. An applied example compares monolithic and modular routes for a compact X-ray inspection head containing a collimator, scintillator, light guide, optical isolator and protective housing. The analysis shows why independently optimized and verifiable zones usually outperform a nominally multifunctional body. The review concludes that optical or radiation function is a system response: composition enables it, but state, spatial distribution, interfaces, geometry, source and detector determine whether it survives qualification.
