Material Jetting and Inkjet Additive Manufacturing

Material jetting creates three-dimensional objects by selectively depositing build-material droplets. Industrial implementations include piezoelectric drop-on-demand photopolymer systems, phase-change and wax routes, solution or suspension deposition and multimaterial platforms. These routes share droplet placement but not a single fluid window, solidification mechanism, support strategy or delivered material state. This qualitative engineering review follows the complete chain from released feedstock to accepted component. It examines material genealogy, temperature-dependent rheology, filtration and degassing, reservoir and backpressure state, actuation and channel acoustics, waveform/frequency interaction, droplet mass, velocity and direction, satellite formation, landing and spreading, inter-drop coalescence, pinning, UV conversion or phase change, layer levelling, multimaterial interfaces, supports, cleaning, post-cure, durability, geometry, surface, cell throughput, safety and change control. Published studies show why no scalar viscosity, surface tension, `Z` value, nominal dpi or layer height can by itself qualify a process. Microfeature and surface results remain machine-, material-, orientation- and support-state-specific; multimaterial properties can depart markedly from ideal volume mixing; and photopolymer properties can change with conditioning and age. The proposed selection gate therefore requires head- and temperature-specific fluid evidence, strobed and statistical nozzle qualification, state-labelled line/layer/part measurements, full post-process validation and accepted-component throughput. Binder jetting, vat photopolymerisation, aerosol/electrohydrodynamic jetting, construction-scale deposition and final dense ceramic/metal qualification after green-body conversion are outside scope.
